Choosing a Property
You will probably have an idea of where you want to live. Things to bear in mind are the things that are important to you, such as:
- Transport - Is it Regular and Reliable? Can I get to work easily?
- Shops - Are they Good Quality?
- Good local schools
- Nightlife (i.e. is it good for restaurants and pubs, or is it going to be too noisy)
- Other Local Amenities - Parks etc.
Make a list of what you ideally want in the area where you want to live, then consider the type of home you are looking for. For example:
- How many bedrooms do I want?
- Do I want a house or a flat?
- If I want a house, do I want a terraced, semi detached or detached?
- Do I want an older property with some character, or do I want a new property?
- Do I want a garden? If so, what size of garden?
- Do I want a garage?
- Do I want a "dooer upper" or do I want to do as little renovation as possible?
Of course, we all have an idea of what our perfect home will look like, but in reality the properties we look at may have most of the ideal qualities we want and not necessarily all. Consider whether you are prepared to trade off one of your ideals in favour of other things, e.g. character, the fact that the property is cheaper and more in your price range etc. Points to remember are that bigger houses are not only more expensive to buy, but also to run. Council tax is likely to be higher than smaller properties, as will be your heating bills.
